
Scott Mason is a seasoned journalist and prolific author known for his captivating storytelling and insightful reporting. With a career spanning over three decades, Scott has left an indelible mark on the field of journalism, garnering numerous accolades and captivating audiences with his narratives.
Since 1997, Scott has served as a dedicated reporter for WRAL-TV, where his commitment to quality journalism has shone through in every story he covers. Prior to his tenure at WRAL, Scott held various roles at prestigious news stations, including anchor, reporter, producer, and news director at WCVE-TV in Richmond, Va. from 1991 to 1997, bureau chief at WHIO-TV in Dayton, Ohio from 1988 to 1990, reporter at WXII-TV in Winston-Salem, N.C. from 1986 to 1988, and reporter at WTVC-TV in Chattanooga, Tenn. from 1984 to 1985.
Beyond his contributions to broadcast journalism, Scott is also a prolific author, having penned five books that showcase his love for North Carolina and its rich cultural heritage. His works include "Tar Heel Traveler's Good Eats: 101 Down-Home North Carolina Classics" (2020), "Tar Heel Traveler: New Journeys Across North Carolina" (2019), "Fair and Air: The Miracle List" (2018), "Tar Heel Traveler Eats: Food Journeys Across North Carolina" (2014), and "Tar Heel Traveler: Journeys Across North Carolina" (2010).
Scott's dedication to his craft has not gone unnoticed, as he has been the recipient of over 100 journalism awards, including prestigious honors such as National Edward R. Murrow Awards, regional Emmys, the Gabriel Award, the National Headliner Award, and two North Carolina TV Reporter of the Year awards.
A true advocate for creative storytelling, Scott believes in the power of great characters and compelling narratives to engage audiences. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Washington and Lee University, earned in 1984, and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte, completed in 2015.
Born in Raleigh, N.C., Scott's deep connection to his home state is evident in both his professional and personal life. Outside of work, he enjoys writing, playing ice hockey and tennis, and spending time with his wife, Nina, and their children, Lane, Genie, and Scout.
Scott's favorite books reflect his passion for writing and storytelling, with titles such as “On Writing” by Stephen King, “On Writing Well” by William Zinsser, and “Bird by Bird” by Anne Lamott topping his list. He also holds a special place in his heart for classics like “The Best of Robert Service” by Robert Service and “The Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss.
In his spare time, Scott appreciates the warm climate and genuine hospitality of North Carolina, qualities that he believes make it a truly special place. Throughout his illustrious career, Scott has covered many memorable assignments, including a one-hour documentary on the D-Day invasion and a headline-grabbing story about an elderly woman who miraculously woke up on an embalming table after being declared dead.
